The Adrenaline Cache

Mr. Big Shoes and I (Iron Chef) went geocaching on 11 August 2001 in the wee hours of the morning.  Usually I go geocaching solo simply because I have no one else to go with, this was one of the few cache hunts that I have gone on with someone else.  In this case, my brother (if you couldn't tell from the pictures), Mr. Big Shoes came with me on this hunt.  He also would have been handy had I fallen to an unfortunantly and untimely death while trying to find my 43rd geocache.

When geocaching in San Diego I have access to a Sony Digital Mavica MVC-FD90 which is why I have pictures of my SD adventures and very few of my Santa Cruz journies.  If anyone wants to donate a digital camera to my worthy cause, you know the address.  ;~)  We took a bunch of pictures and even a short feature length 15-second film.  :~)  There are four sections to this page: Mr Big Shoe's pictures, The MTRP Movie, Iron Chef's pictures, and the logs from geocaching.com.

The Movie!  15 seconds of the best film footage that I could muster up while laughing at Mr. Big Shoe's various antic and random outbursts. Film is just an MPEG movie, so use currently version of Windows Media Player or something else to view it.  As for the sound.... we didn't realize there was a microphone built-into the camera (this damn thing has everything and the kitchen sink, no wonder my pack is so heavy).  Big Shoes is yelling at some people on the opposite side of the gorge who are getting ready to do some rock climbing (we wern't sure if they were rock climbers or just bird doodie yet though, we only found out once we got home and saw the high-res pic that we took of them).  We hope that you enjoy the quick panoramic view that we tried to capture, it was foggy still so the bad weather shows through.

Damn its a long way down.

After finally finding "the rock" that we needed to be at and retrieving the cache, Big Shoes takes a pic of the Chef.

The picture doesn't do it justice.  Lots of bikers on that road down below.  We talked to them even if they didn't talk back.  :)

The white specs are people on the far side of the canyon.  They were getting ready to do some rock climbing.  We were talking to them to.  Big Shoes was actually talking to them during the movie.  Good job Big Shoes.

Big Shoes takes a random picture of the Iron Chef checking out the land for random pancakes.  Why?  For Great Justice!

I asked if we had any disk space left and Big Shoes took a stupid picture of me while we were being goofs atop the rocks.

August 11 by Mr Big Shoes (5 found)
Mr Big Shoes was here. Still hot out even though it was very early in the morning.

Cacher's web site
This was defiantly not a happy spot for me as I'm afraid of heights, but geocaching makes me do things I wouldn't normally do (part of the reason that I like it so much). I learned my lesson last time coming to this park for a cache, and this time left home in Chula Vista at 5 AM and I was on the trail with Mr. Big Shoes accompanying me at the ungodly hour of 5:20 AM. We started at the South entrance again and then made our way to the saddleback part of the mountain and then up along the ridge. We finally got to within 40 feet of the cache where we set down our packs and surveyed the situation and came to a similar conclusion: mine being "Holy geocache Batman! I think this is the end" (this is more of a G rated version of what actually transpired though *grins*). We took some readings and then began to argue as to which rocks were in the picture and which wern't all the while shouting random phrases and lines from B-movies at the people far below and also trying to figure out if there was a group of people sitting around waiting to climb one of the rock faces on the opposite side of the gorge (we weren't sure if they were people or just lots of bird doodie in different spots on the gorge wall.) Well, after a lot of deliberation we checked down below what we both considered too insane to go further down and found a place that seemed appropriate for a geocache... but there wasn't a geocache. Then from the bush immediately to the left of us was a sound that nearly made us jump backwards off the rock to a very squishy death as we retreated up the rocks like small school-children away from a scary clown with good intentions. We decrypted the hint, looked at the picture, said some choice words, and then Big Shoes said, "No way in hell am I sticking MY hand in there yo. You're the one who dragged me out of bed so that you wouldn't have to go alone." After a few moments of thinking all I could come up with was "damn... looks like I'm going then." So I went back down to face my fear of heights, the boogie man, and strange critters that like to nibble on fingers. Past the point of no return we found the cache. Since we were up there (it was surprisingly hot in the valley even at 6 in the morning) we decided to make the most of it by quizzing each other on various songs that one would hear on 91X and we also took a few pictures and a 15 second panoramic movie which will be posted to my web page later today. After an hour or so of messing around at the cache site we... *ahem*... I put the cache back in it's little hidey-hole and we made our way down the steps which took no time at all. All in all a good day and it's only 10:30 AM. :~) Thanks for the adventure, this cache was defiantly unique and quite a rush. Another possible name for this cache could be "Oh S*** it's down there?!?" Defiantly an adventure that is not for the weak of heart.                                             -Iron Chef
